PERSONAL STATEMENT Throughout my school life

PERSONAL STATEMENT
Throughout my school life, I have strived to achieve excellence. I recently completed the Bachelor of Laws degree at Wisconsin International University College, Ghana and I was the only law student to have graduated with a First Class honors in my year group.
I have always had a keen interest in the field of law, hence the reason for studying law at the undergraduate level. Law is an area which has been of great interest to me. I enjoy extensive reading and recognize that it is essential in studying law. After completing the Bachelor of Laws degree, I have gained fundamental knowledge in the field of law and developed an incredibly high interest in furthering my legal education at your prestigious institution. I pay much attention to detail and consider myself to be well suited to a career in law. My academic plan is to complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Bar Practice (Bar Professional Training Course).
I hope to be called to the Bar of England and Wales and subsequently pursue a career as a barrister. Studying this professional course will pave a way for me to achieve my ambition. I definitely think after a successful completion of the professional course, I will be exposed to a wider range of knowledge and experience that would be beneficial for the requirements of being a barrister.
My educational experiences have been of great use to me. Being recognized as a person with good leadership qualities, I was made class president for a year in High school. During my first year as a law student, I was elected to represent my class to serve on a five member Constitutional Committee which was responsible for drafting the Constitution of the Law Students Union. After a successful completion of the above task, I was elected Justice of the Judicial Committee of the law students union, during which I assisted with preparations for the swearing- in of the Chief Justice of the Union as well as the induction of the newly elected executives of the various committees. I also attended committee meetings. Subsequently, I was appointed Chief Justice by the President of the Union. Being the Chief Justice of the Union came with various responsibilities which included, adjudicating on cases, induction of newly elected executives, attending general meetings and engaging in other related activities.
Apart from school work, I have participated actively in extra-curricular activities like sports, ushering at events and attending seminars. I ushered at various events during my leisure time and this developed my communication skills and the ability to work with others through my interaction with a wide variety of people. In high school, I participated in the annual inter-houses competition by representing my house in the javelin competition. I also attended seminars such as, Women In Aviation- Ghana Chapter, a two day training program on International Criminal Law and Justice and Achievers Summit which focused on career development.
In order to gain a practical experience of the law, I worked as an intern and a National Service person at a law firm. My duties included but not limited to, legal research, drafting court processes and letters, attending court, assisting with compliance work with regards to the Registrar General’s Department and general office management. Although my work as a National service person was initially for a year, it was extended by a month due to my dedication and hard work.
Owing to the variety of positions I have held in differentiating working environments, I have been exposed to an extensive range of skills such as, leadership, time management and organizational skills and I have learnt to maintain a right balance between academics and extra- curricular activities. I have also developed an in-depth knowledge in the law as well as strong inter personal relations and communication skills.
Additionally, i earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Information Studies with Psychology from the University of Ghana and this has equipped me with an in depth understanding and experience in Information Technology which plays a vital role in our contemporary world, also, the study of Psychology has widened my understanding of human behavior and diversities of life.
I am convinced that Nottingham Trent University is the place to further my academic career. The addition of the Masters of Law (LLM) to the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) will provide me with indispensable work experience as well as enhancing my legal knowledge and professional skills which will be of great benefit in securing a pupillage. The inclusion of the Master’s degree will give me the added advantage to increase my knowledge in a specific field of law, thus equipping me with additional knowledge and expertise. Ultimately, I will be a much more appealing prospect to future employers.
Another thing which attracts me to the Nottingham Trent University is the high number of students who secure a pupilage after successfully completing the Professional course. The school also assists with marshalling opportunities, where students are allowed to shadow a judge. This will aid in strengthening my pupillage application and seeing cases from a judicial perspective.
After a successful completion of the Bar Professional Training Course, I will acquire the essential training I need to become a qualified barrister as well as securing a pupillage which will enhance my employability.
I strongly believe that I have acquired sufficient academic background and practical experience to take up this program. My eagerness to learn can stand as a tremendous support for me to excel in this program. If given the opportunity to pursue this Professional Course it will pave the best path for me both academically and professionally.
Thank you for your consideration.
