To Kill A Mockingbird Essay
To Kill A Mockingbird:
Who are the Mockingbirds?
As Atticus Finch says in chapter 10 of the book To Kill a Mockingbird, “Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ’em, but remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.” He is saying it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because all mockingbirds do not do anything wrong they just sing their hearts out and they do not eat flowers or gardens. Mockingbirds just sing their beautiful music to us and other animals. I will discuss who are the mockingbirds in To Kill a Mockingbird and explain with supporting details for the characters I chose.
Tom is a black man living during the times of the Great Depression in a small town called Maycomb in Alabama. I know Tom is a mockingbird because he is a good man getting accused of a rape that he did not commit. He is being represented and protected by Atticus, who is the best attorney in the whole town. Tom is accused of rape by Bob Ewell and his daughter Mayella Ewell. Everyone in the town thought Tom committed the rape that he is accused of. Thoughts changed for the whole town when Mayella Ewell spoke up and said Tom did not hit her as everyone had thought. Tom did nothing wrong and by being outcasted for being black he was experiencing a lot of racial prejudice which led to his conviction even though he was innocent. He was shot and killed because of these prejudices while trying to escape and run away from prison.
Atticus Finch is an attorney in the small town of Maycomb, AL. Atticus is the father of two children, Jem and Scout. He was known for having the best shot in town. He is very protective over his two children. One example of him being protective is when a rabid crazy wild dog tried to attack Calpurnia, Jem and Scout. Atticus using his great shooting skills shot the rabid dog in front of their house. Atticus had a wife named Graham that he loved very much. Graham died and Atticus never remarried because he thought she was his only true love. I think Atticus is a mockingbird because he was very protective of his two children and also when he represented Tom when nobody else would even stand up for him. Atticus was a good man and tried to see the good in everybody no matter what the case was.
Who is “Arthur” Boo Radley? “Arthur” Boo Radley is a outcast of society because he stabbed his father in the leg as he was cutting out newspaper clippings. Everyone around town tries to stay away from the Radley house but the kids, Scout and Jem, think it would be brave to get a look at Boo Radley’s face. The old people dislike him because of the situation that happened with him stabbing his father. I know “Arthur” Boo Radley is a mockingbird because he is just trying to do the right thing and how he was trying to befriend Scout and Jem by giving them gifts in a tree before the incident happen with them. When Scout and Jem tried to get a look at his face they took off running and Boo shot at them. Jem lost his pants after almost getting shot and later went back to the house to get his pants but they were folded nice and laid on the fence for him to take back with him. Despite what the town thought about him he was not bad at all. “Arthur” Boo Radley was just another outcast in a small town being judged for the wrong reasons.
Who is Jem? I do not consider Jem a mockingbird until he sees his father shoot the mad dog because before that he was just a troublemaker. I consider him a mockingbird later on because he matured and learned from his mistakes when he was younger. He showed off his maturity by reading to Ms. Dubose everyday while she was sick. He wanted to follow in his dads footsteps because he knew what a great man he was.
Who is Scout? Scout is the main character of the story. Scout is the one explaining the story and telling about all the trouble she got in and caused. To me it took Scout a while to learn from her mistakes, but it made her become a mockingbird. When she was younger she was a follower who did not do anything on her own unless it was beating people up. She was saved by Jem and Boo and mockingbirds need to be protected. Scout then later matured during Tom’s case because she and Jem knew Tom was being done wrong by everybody. She knew Tom should not of been found guilty. Scout stopped being a follower at that point because she did not go along with everybody else in the town. She matured and started seeing things the way they should, and she was not prejudice like all the others.
After Tom was killed Mr.Ewell was trying to kill Scout and Jem because almost losing the court case made Mr.Ewell look bad. Boo then later saves them by killing Mr.Ewell. Boo is then protected by the Sheriff by when the Sheriff made up a lie about Mr.Ewell falling on his knife. The Sheriff knew Mr.Ewell was a evil man and protecting Boo was the right thing to do. The sheriff showed that all Mockingbirds need protection at some point in their lives.
